Do all EV Chargers have the same plug?

No, unfortunately they don't all have the same plug. According to the National Electronics Manufacturers Association (NEMA), a charger is a device that replenishes an EV's batteries using electricity. While many chargers are compatible with various EV models, not all of them are. Make sure to check the equipment manufacturer's recommendations to ensure that the charger you're considering is compatible with your EV.

In North America, most electric vehicle manufacturers utilize SAE J1772 connectors, also known as the J plug, for both Level 1 (120 volt) and Level 2 (240 volt) AC charging. While Tesla has traditionally used its proprietary NACS connector, which is compatible with SAE J1772 and CCS1 Combo through adapters, the company opened up the standard to other manufacturers in 2022. By the end of 2023, nearly all major car manufacturers announced plans to adopt SAE J3400 for their vehicles starting in 2025. This move aims to provide broader access to charging networks and a single charging connector for both AC and DC charging. EV charging providers are also following suit, with many planning to incorporate NACS connector options into their chargers in the future.
